About Braces

Types of braces

Traditional metal braces

Metal braces are the most common type of braces and have become more comfortable to wear. Through innovation of the technology the braces are much smaller, flatter and less painful.

Traditional metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel and include three key components: brackets, archwires and ties. The ties wrap around the brackets and apply gentle pressure to your teeth to straighten them. The brackets are mounted on the front surface of the teeth and connected using the archwire.

Today’s metal braces are smaller, more comfortable and more attractive to wear, and for our younger patients, they can be made even more fun with different coloured ties that can be changed at each visit.

Ceramic braces

Also, known as clear braces offer patients an effective combination of ceramic brackets with wires. The design is ideal for older teens and adults, providing them with an appliance that is sturdy and attractive. A benefit for those who have a cosmetic concern.

Ceramic braces tend to be recommended to patients that have had all their adult teeth come in and have stopped growing. The braces are more subtle and usually tooth coloured or white, they are less noticeable. This is ideal for patients that work full-time, attend college or university, or simply do not want to draw to much attention their braces. Although, if you want to standout in a crowd you can choose almost any colour imaginable.

Ceramic braces work in the same was as traditional metal braces do; it’s just their appearance that is slightly different. The brackets are made from a semi-transparent ceramic material that blends in with the color of your teeth.

The ceramic won’t stain so you can proceed with orthodontic treatment without having to feel self-conscious.

Clearcorrect Aligner

Clearcorrect Invisible Aligners is the orthodontic system that doesn’t use braces to straighten teeth, though some people do refer to as invisible braces. Instead of braces, Clearcorrect uses a series of clear plastic aligners that look like thin sports mouthguards to move teeth into position. These aligners are custom-made for comfort and can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing.

It is really important you do so because proper brace care contributes to great results!

9 Top tips for brace care

  • Avoid chewing gum.

  • Avoid hard, chewy candy (i.e. caramels, Jolly Ranchers).

  • When eating raw produce, such as apples, cut it into small bite-size pieces and chew with your back teeth.

  • Surprisingly, hard or chewy pizza crust can be problematic, so if you’re sitting down to a meal of pizza, make sure you cut it into small pieces. You’ll enjoy it a whole lot more if your braces don’t break.

  • Do not chew on ice cubes. If anything, you may chew on crushed or shaved ice.

  • Avoid nuts, biscotti, and hard crusts in general.

  • If you’re a nail biter or like to chew on the end of a pencil, break these habits now as they will cause your appliance to break.

  • Avoid popcorn. Kernels can wedge between your gums and the appliance and cause infection.

  • If you are about to eat something that you are unsure whether or not it may cause damage, be very cautious or just avoid eating it all together.

A broken appliance can delay your treatment time and affect the movement of your teeth. If you notice a band, archwire, or bracket has loosened or broken off the tooth surface, contact us so we can schedule a repair appointment as soon as possible.
